South Sudan / Wau und Jur River County
Emergency aid for those affected by civil war and natural disasters
Situation: With its population of around twelve million people, South Sudan is the world’s youngest nation and among the ten countries facing the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide. The country has known no peace since it gained its independence in 2011. Violence, political tension and recurring conflicts have displaced millions of people and destroyed their livelihoods. For many, hunger and hardship are part of everyday life. More than 40% of the population is dependent on food aid. South Sudan is frequently hit by severe floods, which exacerbates the famine in the country.
Goals:
The basic nutritional needs of more than 7.8 million people in South Sudan are expected to not be met in 2025. Three in five South Sudanese must skip meals or sell possessions just to afford food. Beside food, clean water and essential household items are also in short supply. Many families can only afford one meal per day and malnutrition is on the rise among young children. Women and children often walk for miles to fetch water from unsafe sources. The shortage of cooking stoves, soap and blankets compounds the health risks.
Target group:
The project aims to improve the living conditions for particularly vulnerable returnees and internally displaced persons in Wau and Jur River County.
Geplante Maßnahmen:
Food aid for 1,200 households, supplementary nutrition for 300 children, construction of a well for 500 households, distribution of medicine and relief kits.
The Redel Foundation is supporting the project with €80,000.
