Cameroon / Extrême-Nord province
Food aid for displaced persons
Situation: The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram has been active in northern Nigeria, Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon since 2010. More than two million people have been displaced. Local agriculture has been brought to a standstill. The food situation has deteriorated dramatically.
Some 570,000 people are currently fleeing Cameroon’s Extrême-Nord province. The host areas are strained beyond capacity, which is leading to tension with the local population. Many refugees from Nigeria also live there in precarious conditions.
The region is among the poorest in the country. 74% of the population lives below the poverty line. Climate change, deforestation and irregular rainy seasons have further eroded livelihoods. Every year between May and September, the food crisis worsens (“lean season”). A particularly dire situation is expected in 2025: According to current prognoses, around 30% of the population will be affected by acute hunger/food shortages.
Target group and planned measures:
The aim is to provide 14,000 people (2,000 families) with basic food supplies to help combat malnutrition. 2,000 children and pregnant/breastfeeding women will also receive supplementary nutrition.
The Redel Foundation is supporting the project with €50,000.
