Eritrea
Food security for disadvantaged families as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and locust plague
There was a chronic food shortage in Eritrea even before the outbreak of the coronavirus. It is also becoming increasingly affected by the locust plague, which has caused serious damage in the East African countries. The harvests so desperately needed by the people in Eritrea are being destroyed.
The partner organisation of Caritas international in Eritrea is the Catholic Eparchy of Keren. Familiar with the local conditions, this organisation distributes food to the 1,500 vulnerable families who have been particularly affected by the pandemic. Thirty-five kilograms of basic foodstuffs, including grain, lentils, chickpeas and vegetable oil, is distributed to each household every month. This covers approx. 60 percent of the basic monthly requirements of a family in Eritrea.
The project is being supported by the Redel Foundation with €75,000.
