Nursing care for homeless people in Baden-Baden
In Baden-Baden, the Caritas association runs a residential facility for homeless people facing severe social hardship. Many of them are in poor health – and a growing number also require nursing care. Particularly the medical and nursing care for older people experiencing homelessness is inadequate. This is due to a lack of services addressing their specific needs.
The residential facility that Caritas runs in Baden-Baden has seen a steady rise in the need for nursing care in recent years, particularly among residents aged over 55. Many new arrivals have not had their care needs assessed, nor are they receiving any medical care yet. Outpatient nursing care options largely remain inaccessible to them.
To address this issue, Caritas plans to recruit a care professional for its interdisciplinary team, who would provide immediate medical and nursing care. They would work with social services to ensure homeless people can access further support – by assisting with applications or helping to obtain referrals to appropriate care facilities, for example. Measures are additionally planned to help (re)integrate individuals into broader support systems.
The Redel Foundation will support this important project for three years with €50,000 per year.
